  • Topeng and, in particular, Japanese Topeng can be traced back (by most accdounts) to the Javanese courts around 1000 to 1400. In it's early days it was a specialty of the courts but through time was also brought into everyday life. It originally was meant to be plays about gods and courts and battles won and lost but it also became the tool for rural life and was used to exxorcise as well as entertain.
